Lil Yachty shares his love for luxury living as part of a new eBay series called “Old School Meets New School”. Launched today on eBay’s social media pages, the series kicks off with a conversation between flashy rapper and style legend Iris Apfel. The two get together to discuss clothes, watches, and creating a signature look, whether that’s through beaded braids or oversized glasses.
Yachty, whose personal style captures a younger generation’s love for streetwear, vintage finds, and non-binary grooming, recounts Rolling stone that he was delighted to hear Apfel in the discussion: âI’m always interested in talking to past generations of people, influential people,â he says. “I wish I could talk to Robin Williams [too]», He adds, about a surprising fashion influence. “I’m so interested in his style.”
One of the duo’s talking points is their shared passion for watches. A few years ago, Apfel, famous for its extravagant jewelry and eyewear collection, teamed up with Tag Heuer. Yachty, meanwhile, has built an impressive collection of watches over the years. While he’s not sure exactly how many timepieces he owns, Yachty does have a favorite; âMy favorite watch is my skeleton Patek because I haven’t seen anyone with it,â he boasts. The ultra-rare Patek Philippe is valued at around $ 100,000.
Though he’s best known for pioneering a new hip-hop subgenre alongside Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Pump, and Young Thug, Yachty’s style has always been one of his powers. “[Fashion] was just a part of me, âsaid the 24-year-old. âI’ve always loved clothes, so I just do what I love to do.
Even though Yachty’s fame (and wardrobe) has grown, he still maintains an effortless attitude to dressing: âIt just depends on how I feel,â he says. “Today I feel lazy, you know, so I’m sweaty because I really don’t care.”
Yachty made waves in the fashion world as a model at Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 album listening party at Madison Square Garden. It was in 2016, around the same time that Yachty’s musical career took off. Earlier this year, the Atlanta rapper launched his own brand, Crete, which produces fresh nail polish for all genres. Yachty tells us that â[Crete] going amazing. We’re about to release our next color palette, so I’m super happy. He adds that running the brand “It’s cool, it takes a lot of attention, but it’s cool”.
Throughout her fashion endeavors, Yachty always finds time to enter the studio. Lately he’s been to Detroit, lending a tribute to up-and-coming rappers from Michigan. About working with new artists, he says, âFor me it’s not putting on an A&R hat, it’s just listening to music. I’m a fan like everyone is a fan [and] I play music too. So I don’t really see it as an A&R point of view, I’m a fan and I’m not afraid to reach out [â¦] I don’t care how tall you are or how popular you are. It’s just my thing.
This time in Detroit gave the April prize Michigan Boy Boat, a mixtape that sees Yachty swapping verses with Michigan rappers including Tee Grizzley, Veeze, Baby Smoove, BabyTron and Babyface Ray. Most recently, Yachty celebrated her birthday on August 23 with a new mixtape, Birthday mix 6.
In addition to more Michigan rap, new Cretan releases, and his upcoming talk on âOld School Meets New School,â Yachty is looking to break into acting. âTaking action is hard work. Trying to land roles is hard work, but I’m working on it, âhe says of his latest passion. His inspiration? “Matthew McConaughey is my favorite actor of all time.”
